We have a staging server setup in a virtual machine using ESX 3.5. The upgrade to Adobe Connect 7 went fine on that server, used the same exact steps as a physical machine. If you would like any other detail please feel free to ask.
Andy - did you put any kind of a load on the Connect VM to see how many users you can support? We're considering a P2V and are not sure if it will work and what kind of CPU/RAM to provide to the VM.
Actually, we have not tested it with a load. I would suggest provisioning 4GB or ram, Dual 2-3 GHz processors, and at least 100GB of disk space for each vm (1GB for the install, the rest for content, unless you are using shared content). From what I understand, Adobe mentions that Connect can handle about 500 users (concurrently) per cluster node. Just FYI.
Did you use SQL Server 2005 or did you try SQL Server 2008. Was the upgrade using just one machine or two or more vm servers load balanced. Anything that we use look out for in the upgrade to Connect 7? We have SQL 2000 right now so how was the data migration to go to SQL 2005?
We use SQL Server 2005. The upgrade was on two virtual servers load balance with Microsoft Network Load Balancing (Which we do not use anymore....we just got a hardware load balancer). We never used SQL 2000 in our Connect implementation, we were using SQL 2005 when we installed it. One note of warning with the upgrade to Connect7....do not have more than one NIC on each of your servers. With the previous version having two nics worked fine, however the new version seems to exploit a Server 2003 SP1 bug that we have seen before using multiple adapters. If you would like more information on this I would be glad to call you and explain it in more depth...
